Seal Your Air Duct Boot

Part of a properly functioning HVAC system are the air duct boots. Air duct boots, also known as HVAC boots, are what fit into the cutout area of the sheet rock or floor. The air ducts are connected to the boot, usually secured by a strong zip tie, and then the boot is placed into the cutout and then the register is attached.  This cutout is usually anywhere from 1/8″ to 1/2″ larger than the boot.

So, why does this matter to you? When the cutout area is too large or the boots are not properly secured, it can cause both hot and cold air to enter the living space. This can cause the unit overwork, as it tries to regulate the set temperature. This confluent of cold and hot air causes condensation on the air duct boots and register, resulting in mold and mildew to enter the ducts and spread to your system and your home.
